Eye Nutrition

Undoubtedly good nutrition helps you to maintain good health and vision. But the question is "Do you know what is best for your eyes?" and "Are you taking the recommended allowance of nutrients on a daily basis?" This page attempts to address the issue briefly to remind you the good old saying: "Prevention is better than cure".

Can you believe Oxygen could also be harmful for our body? Yes, that's the fact. Very unstable chemical compound, free radicals, derived from Oxygen either by photochemical reactions or by synthesis can damage the healthy cells. By nature, human body has systems to produce or make use of certain vitamins and minerals, called antioxidants, to fight against the effects of these free radicals.

The first part that will be affected by these free radicals is the retina, the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye where the image is focussed by the cornea and lens. Cigarette smoking increases the free radicals that in turn increase the possibility of ageing. Studies show that the cataract and macular degeneration are caused by these free radicals.

Vitamin A, C and E are very effective antioxidants preventing the eyes from the damages caused by the free radicals. These vitamins are found abundantly in fresh vegetables like oranges, tomatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, nuts, seeds, animal / plant fat and protein sources like dairy products, eggs and many more.

The two carotenoid antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin, are also being recommended by many doctors. These carotenoids can be found in natural food as explained above and also in the form of vitamin tablet to suit the modern living habits. Although these supplements are not substitutes for natural fruits and vegetables, may be used when diet does not include enough fresh fruit and your body does not adequately absorb vegetables or the vitamins they contain.
